So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!
History
Even though this is a relatively small island, there is a lot of history on it. The first people known to have visited the island were the Lucayans, who used the Island as a place to send their criminals and outcasts. However, they never stayed for long because of this island's poor soil and lack of natural freshwater.
In the early 1500s, Spanish and French explorers visited the island and claimed it for their respective countries; however, they never attempted to settle there. Later on, in the late 1700s, a boatload of Bermudian sailors arrived on Cat Island and settled on its southern side of Bahamas Real Estate.
Around the same time, two American families also arrived on the Island and settled in its northern part. Together, these three groups established themselves on the island and built homes, plantations, stores, churches, schools, and roads.
Today
Today about 2000 people live on this Island (not counting tourists, of course). The population is primarily African-Bahamian and is incredibly friendly and happy to help visitors. The economy on the Island is based on fishing, boat building, farming (sugar cane and pineapples), and tourism. There are two main settlements on the island: New Bight in the south and Sandy Point in the north. The people of this Island are very religious; for example, every year, there is a three-day festival to celebrate God and Jesus.
Getting There
The Island is only accessible by boat or plane. You can get there by taking a boat from Nassau. Another option is to take a small plane from Nassau to the Island's Airport. The airport is about two miles outside New Bight, the main settlement on this Island.
Where To Stay
Since there are only a few settlements on the island in the Bahamas, most tourists stay in New Bight or Sandy Point. New Bight has several small hotels and guest houses for tourists, including The Cat Island Hotel. This hotel is the only one of its kind on the island and offers both luxury rooms and affordable rooms. The Island House is a guesthouse located in the center of New Bight. Seagull Hotel is also in the center of New Bight next to Majors Dime Store.
There are plenty of other accommodations available all around the Island. However, if you are looking for something outside of New Bight, you will need to rent a room or house from a local. If you are planning to stay overnight on the Island, be aware that most buildings don't have electricity. So if you are used to having electric lights at night, bring some flashlights or headlamps with you!
Since it is a small island with a small population, there aren't too many attractions to visit. One of them is the Bob Marley Museum: One of the most famous people to ever come out of this Island was reggae singer and songwriter Bob Marley. If you're a fan of reggae music, this is the place to visit while you're on this Island.
Another attraction that many people enjoy seeing is the Conch Shell House. One of the locals in New Bight built this beautiful blue shell-shaped building to house conch shells that he found on the beach. The Real People's Organic Farm is another exciting place to check out while on the Island. It's a small organic farm run by the Real People Commune, consisting of about 20 people (mostly farmers). They grow pineapple, tomatoes, yams, and other vegetables. This farm not only grows food for the commune but provides a way to make a living on the Island for those who need it.
